Troubleshooting audio input

The most common audio-input problems and how to fix them.

Common causes

  • No microphone permission. Grant it in your system settings, as explained below.
  • Wrong input device. Try a different input device in the Recording Settings.
  • Unsupported input format. VoceVista tries to pick a working format, but you may need to set one manually: try different sampling rates, mono vs. stereo, and 16-bit vs. 32-bit in the Recording Settings.
  • Distorted recording. The input volume is too loud. Especially for singing, you often have to lower it more than you would expect to get a distortion-free recording.
  • Recording fades after a few seconds. This is usually noise suppression from your operating system or audio driver, not VoceVista. Turn off noise suppression (or "recording enhancements") for your input device in your OS sound settings.

Grant microphone permission

After running the app at least once, verify it has permission to access the microphone.

macOS

Go to System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Microphone and make sure "VoceVista Video" or "VoceVista Video Pro" is checked.

Windows

On Windows 11, go to Settings ▸ Privacy & security ▸ App permissions ▸ Microphone and make sure VoceVista Video (or Overtone Analyzer) is allowed to access the microphone.

Test recording & playback

In the Options window, select Recording and confirm the correct input device is selected. Close the window, press the red Record button on the toolbar and make some noise into your microphone. Does it appear to record? Can you hear it on playback? If recording does not start, re-check the microphone permissions, then try different input devices, sampling rates and channel formats in the Recording Settings.

Update drivers

Make sure you are using the latest firmware and drivers for your audio interface. These are usually on the manufacturer's website for your device.

Try DirectSound input

On Windows (not macOS) you can try DirectSound input, which sometimes fixes input issues. In VoceVista, open Tools ▸ Settings ▸ Advanced Settings and enable Audio Performance ▸ Enable DirectSound input. Then open Recording Settings, click the Input Device field and select your device with the "DirectSound" prefix. Make a new recording. If that still does not fix it, send us a support request.

Submit feedback

After trying to record and play back, click Help ▸ Send Support Request and send us a short note. This includes the log file from your session, with any error messages, so we can help. See also how to get support.
